In December 2006 the government's National Physical Laboratory, contracted out its cleaning to Amey, a multimillion pound services provider. When they took over the contract there were 36, unionised Latin American cleaners earning �7 an hour. After an immigration raid and multiple sackings there are now 15, many of whom are on temporary contracts and only earning the minimum wage. it’s November 1999, and five days are about to rock the world as tens of thousands of demonstrators take to the streets of Seattle in protest of the World Trade Organization’s Ministerial Meeting. Among them are Django (Andre Benjamin), Sam (Jennifer Carpenter), Lou (Michelle Rodriguez) and Jay (Martin Henderson). Each has a unique story, but they’re united in a common desire to be heard and to make a difference in the world. For these four protesters, this is very personal and the stakes are higher than mere politics. A peaceful demonstration to stop the WTO talks quickly escalates into a full-scale riot, and soon a State of Emergency is declared by the Mayor of Seattle. The streets are mayhem, and the WTO is paralyzed. Caught in the crossfire of civil liberties and keeping the peace are Seattle residents, including its beleaguered mayor (Ray Liotta), a riot cop on the streets (Woody Harrelson) and his pregnant wife (Charlize Theron). The choices they all make will change their lives forever. Writer/Director Stuart Townsend brings together this talented ensemble to intertwine different points of view – from protesters and police to delegates and doctors -- each of whom intentionally or accidentally find themselves on the streets of Seattle in those last days of the millennium. Townsend seamlessly merges footage of the real event with his fictional narrative. Ultimately, Battle in Seattle illustrates that even against incredible odds, ordinary people can change the world.

At Cafe Oto, Ashwin Street, Dalston. The meeting includes the premier of Winstan Whitter's new documentary film "Save our Heritage"(some of you may have seen his brilliant film "A legacy in the dust"). The writer Iain Sinclair will describe his strange experience of being banned from Hackney Council's libraries and he will be reading from his forthcoming book "Hackney. That rose-red empire". There will be performances of poetry by Dalston's very own Michael Rosen childrens' laureate, writer and broadcaster. Our Olympic Legacy Followers of OPEN's campaign in Dalston will recall that, on appealing to the Secretary of State to call in the authorities plans for the demolition and redevelopment of Dalston, we received the reply that "the proposed transport interchange between the East London line northern extension, the North London Line and London Buses, is an essential part of the transport improvements required for the London Olympics 2012." Barratt's development of 10 to 20 storey residential towers on Hackney Council's Dalston Lane (South) site. Only 28 flats will be for social housing. These photos are of the Dalston transport interchange now under construction and the towerblocks with 550 flats and shops being built for sale to pay for it. TfL's £39 million concrete slab development for a bus turnaround above the Dalston Junction East London Line station where Barratt's are to build further residential towers of up to 20 storeys for private sale. The evening will conclude with information about the authorities plans for the demolition and redevelopment of over 20 more buildings in Dalston and a discussion about our Olympic legacy.
